How to build a habit that actually sticks, even if you have tried ten times

Habits are not won with motivation. They are won with design. Make the thing small, obvious, and rewarding.

Routine De Buzz editors

Most habit advice falls apart for the same reason diets do: it relies on willpower. And willpower, the research keeps telling us, is a finite, unreliable resource.

The people who seem to effortlessly keep a habit are almost never more disciplined than you. They have designed their environment so the habit is the easiest thing to do.

Ideal starting size of most habits

1 miss

Is fine. Never miss twice in a row.

Make it tiny

If you want to read more, start with one page a day. If you want to move more, start with a two minute walk. The goal is to make the habit so small that skipping it feels weirder than doing it.

Tiny habits build the part of you that does the habit, and that matters more than the output in the first month.

Make it obvious

Leave cues where you will see them

Book on the pillow. Running shoes by the door. Guitar on a stand, not in its case. Friction, good or bad, decides most of your behaviour.

Attach it to an existing routine

After I make coffee, I read one page. After I brush my teeth, I do two minutes of stretching. Habit stacking works because it reuses a signal you already respond to.

Make it rewarding

  1. 1

Track it, even with a tick in a paper calendar. The visual streak is a reward in itself.

  2. 2

Celebrate small wins out loud. A quiet yes after you finish counts.

  3. 3

Let the habit earn a small treat, separate from any guilt food. A favourite podcast only on walk days, for example.

  4. 4

Forgive every miss. Missing once is an accident. Missing twice in a row is the start of quitting.
